What’s with Friday the 13th?

Oops!! It’s again Friday the thirteenth, and don’t worry Friday the thirteenth can occur as frequently as 3 times a year, either in February, March and November in an ordinary year (such as 1987), or January, April and July in leap years (such as 2012) and also longest period that can occur without a Friday the 13th is fourteen months.

But what makes the date so important are the many superstitions that are connected to it, The fear of Friday the 13th has been called friggatriskaidekaphobia  (Frigga being the name of the Norse goddess for whom “Friday” is named and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen), or paraskevidekatriaphobiaa concatenation of the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή, meaning “Friday”), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς, meaning “thirteen”) attached to phobía (φοβία, from phóbos, φόβος, meaning “fear”).

Though we cannot date back, as to when superstitions  started to be connected to this particular date, the foremost documented evidence lies in 1869, a biography of  ‘Gioachino Rossini’  written by  Henry Sutherland Edwards. He stated that Rossini feared the date  and eventually , died on the same day. We can say the law of attraction works both ways and if we keep anticipating something bad we can become the victim of it. We should stop feeding our minds with bad thoughts since negativity can also get powerful and take form.

In the Western Culture moreover in the Christian theology, Christ died on a Friday, which makes it automatically a ‘cursed’ day  and Thirteen is significant to Christians because it is the number of people who were present at the Last Supper (Jesus and his 12 apostles). Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th member of the party to arrive. The thirteenth card in the Tarot deck is the death card but the appearance of it signifies transformation, in short- death of the present circumstances giving way to new opportunities.

We can notice that there is an acceptance to the no.12 and we do not move on to the 13 for example we have only twelve  months, twelve zodiac signs, twelve hours of the clock, twelve Gods of Olympus , twelve tribes of Israel( Bible), twelve apostles of Christ , twelve successors of Mohammad , etc., we can considerably go on..

It has affected human mind to such an extent that people avoid doing anything auspicious on this day, people go to the extent of avoiding routine chores as well. Avoid room no.13 in hotels,  no.13 floors are skipped in buildings,  no.13 gates are excluded, wards and beds of hospitals and the list goes on. Statistics show that the result of the influence on the mass indicates decline in economic scale on  Friday the 13th but one good side effect is decline in no. of accidents since people avoid going out.

But the question still survives, what’s with Friday the thirteenth? We as humans have a tendency to displace our responsibilities on others, it is hard for us to accept our faults and very easily we put the blame on others even on mere dates. So today if something bad occurs, place the blame on the date, “Friday the Thirteenth”.

  1. I don’t superstion holds a place in my life… If it did I could numba every date in the diary as a day to look out not walk under ladders or forget to salute the single bird I pass.. Everyday is what you make it and you look for disaster you will find it why blame it simply because it is fri 13 th

    • Yes, definitely even I don’t blame dates, not even people. What befalls us, are our own thoughts words and deeds. If we sow cactus we cant expect a mango from it.

  2. Thanks for enabling me to achieve new tips about computer systems. I also possess the belief that certain of the best ways to keep your laptop computer in prime condition is to use a hard plastic material case, or even shell, that matches over the top of one’s computer. These kind of protective gear are usually model targeted since they are made to fit perfectly over the natural covering. You can buy all of them directly from the vendor, or through third party sources if they are intended for your mobile computer, however not every laptop will have a covering on the market. All over again, thanks for your suggestions.
